Short Course Rally Championship Event 2
Story by Nathaniel Dillon
Short Course Event 2 in Monaro feature roads typical of the Benarkin forest. With two stages (Noorinbee Ridge Ascent and Descent) closely lined by trees traversing up and down the mountain featuring fast and slower sections.
Drivers presented in beautifully maintained Alpine Renault, Ford, Opel and Fiat rear wheel drive vehicles. Once again a great mix of “real life” drivers, co-drivers, event organisers, officials and rally fans came along to join the fun.
Right from the outset the stages proved difficult with HARVZILLA, BUZZY, ENFORCER and MROLLINSON retiring in the first two stages. Stage 1 and we witnessed a return to the rally stages from Cameron Taylor proving that competing in speedway has taken away none of his skills with a fine 4th place behind speedsters from the Jimna event Hoy, Kilbride and Baker. Stage 2 was once again dominated by the Alpine A110’s of Hoy, Kilbride and Baker, Ford Escorts were also popular with four cars in the top 10.
ADAM_77 continued his good run to maintain his 9th place and the highest placed Opel Kadett, two places above French competitor BEUNZ911 after stage 3. Stage 4 proved to difficult for myself (NAT_RALLY), BONDY555 and CHRISOGT4 all losing a minute or more compared to the previous run over this stage. Once again the Alpine Renaults took the top 3 places with the next three filled by Escorts.
Stage 5 and Hoy once again extended his lead which was now 45 seconds, with Baker in 2nd to Aaron Beard in 7th only separated by 1 minute. After the final stage of the rally the Alpines of Hoy, Baker and Kilbride finished top 3 with Stephen Whitaker and BEUNZ911 rounding out the top 10.
Keep and eye out for Event 3. Once the 3rd event in this short course championship is finished we will be moving on to a championship that will be based (road styles and itineraries) on some of the events running in the Qld Rally Championship.
